*Melanoma Militia is a non-profit corporation organized and operating as a 501 (c) 3 public charity.  It also operates under the trade name Cancer Militia and is considered one entity.  Your donation is 100% tax deductible!  Though not "formally" recognized under the IRS code, public charities whose annual gross receipts are normally not more than $5000 may be treated as tax-exempt without filing a formal application.  Our filing with the Secretary of State does not give the option to include public charities that are not in publication 78 the box to mark that donations are tax deductible.  We have to mark "donations are not tax deductible" because the system only asks if you have applied for the tax exempt status or received your determination letter.  You must then enter the date of the acceptance or the application.  Neither of those options apply to our charity.  However your donation is tax deductible and we are informally recognized in the IRS system as tax exempt and file a annual form 990-N e-postcard.  We could not file this form without the exempt status in the IRS system.
